Deer Season 2012 Part 2

 

This deer season seemed to be the best one yet. I struggled through an all day set in the stand because it looked as if the weather was going to be the best for hunting on the first day and then go down hill from there with warm full moon nights. I managed to get to the stand a little earlier than usual but that didn't seem to make much difference because I didn't see a deer all morning. I got down from the stand and headed down to the South East corner of the property to see if there were any activity at all. I heard a few shots in the distance but after a couple of hours, I made my way back to the stand arriving right after noon. I sat and struggled through the warm afternoon thinking I should have just got down and made my way back to the house until later. The warm breeze and over dressing made it difficult to stay focused and my eyes would drift closed occasionally. I would hear a noise in the distance that would make my eyes snap open only to see that it was a squirrel or a bird rustling in the dry fallen leaves. I remained at my post until just after 2:30pm when I was suddenly startled by a noise to my right and behind me. When I swiveled my head to see what made the noise I was astonished that about 45 yards out, it was deer, the first one I had see all day and second that it was a buck. But not only a buck, a nice buck. I spun around leaning to my left as the deer started to move around the back side of the tree and head away from me. I placed the dot from my red dot scope just behind the shoulder and squeezed the trigger just before he turned and got behind a bunch of brush. The buck backed up after the shot and turned to run toward me to my surprise. The buck ran to my right about 25 yards before he struggled and collapse. I was confident that I had made a good shot and that the buck was a shooter but wasn't sure how many points he may have had. After waiting a few minutes I made my way down to the ground with shaky legs and maneuvered over to the trail. I walked up the buck with my heart pounding in my chest and after a little bit of craning and peeking through the tall brush could tell the buck was down for the count. I quickly counted the rack that was sticking up and ended at 5 points. I then after confirming the animal was down reached to lift the head to see what the rack down in the leaves would yield. The buck was a very nice symmetrical 10 point. The largest deer I had ever been lucky to harvest to this day. I was elated to finally get the chance and be able to harvest such a nice buck. I hit the deer a little back with my shot taking both lungs, the liver and the stomach. Hope you were able to enjoy the hunting season.

Deer Season 2012 part 1

This weekend we headed down for deer season. A tragedy in our family made a fewchanges in our usual schedule. Instead of staying at the farm we decided to come home every night. We awoke every morning at 5:30am and made the 45 minute drive to the farm. I got down to the stand just after sunup and settled in for a long set. After about an hour I had a couple of does slip by me on the other side of the large ditch. The day ended early as back spasms drove me out of the stand before sunset. The next morning we arrived alittle earlier than the previous morning. I made it to the stande before the sun was all the way up due to some cloud cover in the east. About an hour into the set I had a couple of coyotes walk by without detecting me. I thought that they may keep the deer out of the area but ended up with seeing 8 does from the stand. I made my way back to the house just before sundown. This morning we again arrived at the farm and on my way down to my stand I heard a shot from where Uncle B was setting. As I made my way closer I saw B walking around looking for the deer. I left him to his hunt while I made my way back to my stand. I should have just went back to the house because I ended up with spotting 1 doe about 60 yards into the thick woods. Since the morning was so slow and the afternoon would be warm I decided to call it done for first season. The deer would probably bed down and with few hunters in the area to push them, it would be a waste of time. B found his deer. It was a young button buck.  I hope second season will be better.

Deer Season 2011

Well deer season was somewhat disappointing. The first 3 day season although I saw a lot of deer, they were all too far away for a shot. I did see one Buck for all of about 2 seconds for about 60 yards through the woods. The first season ended without a harvest. The second season was going to be a little cooler and the weather a little better so I was hopeful that my luck would change. The first day started off with seeing several deer but all were on the east side of the ditch which is about 15 feet across and about 8 feet deep full to the brim with back water from the 4 inches of rain we got the 3 days before the second season. Rain and backwaters usually end up messing up one of the seasons. At around 2pm on the first day after seeing deer across the ditch I decided to take a shot at one. A nice doe eased up the the edge of the ditch with 3 other does. I placed my dot at 60 yards just on the top edge of her shoulder blade and squeezed off a shot. She dropped in her tracks but in my mind I was thinking, great now we got to get her from across the ditch. Just then I heard a splash and then saw a doe run by the stand at about 20 yards and stop. I wondered if this might be one of the accompanying does but after looking over the doe I saw a reddish spot just above and just back of her right shoulder blade after a few seconds she shuttered and was going down. The shot passed through and exited left groin area in in the deer's left thigh. The does that were with her all scattered in different directions and my water soaked doe was on the ground. My doe had delivered herself across the ditch herself. Of the luck I was to have this season that was about it. The next 2 days I sat in a deer stand from 6am until 4pm and saw all sorts of does except for a button buck and another buck for a couple seconds at about 80 yards out. Over the season I bet I saw anywhere from 15 to 20 deer every day but hardly any bucks. I still have a tag to fill so we will see about the late antler-less season but we will see how the weather will be.

Since they have taken the corn out from around the small woods the traffic has been down. I think it's still a little warm for the deer to come into rutt but hopefully the cooler temps in the next few weeks will kick it off in time for the first shotgun deer season.
